Parting ways with a family member is sad and stressful. Having to decide what to do with your pet's body is often an additional burden, why not explore options for the care of your pet before death? Most veterinary hospitals will keep your pet's body for a few days while you consider your options, however during this difficult time these decisions are often made hastilly. Some of us leave the decision to the veterinarian or animal shelter. With additional research, many of us are often surprised at the final dispostion of our family member. It’s often a mass grave with no mention of the companionship and love your pet provided during its life. There are several alternatives to choose from, depending on practical, legal, financial or emotional dynamics. The following information will help you better understand what's available so that you can make the decision that's best for your family.
Pet Cemetery -You can bury your pet in a pet cemetery. Pet cemeteries offer a wide range of burial and cremation choices to fit your needs. They perform duties and services similar to a funeral home and cemetery. Many veterinary clinics and humane societies also operate pet cemeteries and crematories. Pets can be buried either in a private plot or in a communal plot. In a communal burial, your pet is buried in the same plot with other deceased pets. Some cemeteries that do not provide individual gravestones for pets buried in a communal plot, will often provide a memorial wall acknowledging those pets.
Cremation - Cremation can be a practical option. Cremated remains may be placed in a small urn which you can keep close by and take with you if you move, or you can also bury or scatter the remains in a special place, based on local government regulations. Before selecting an animal crematory, find out the cremation procedures. Some facilities perform mass cremations and then divide the ashes (unless you request an individual cremation, you could end up with the remains of other pets in addition to those of your own pet).
Home Burial - Check local government regulations to see whether burying pets at home is a legal option in your area. If this is an option, ensure you secure and place the body at a depth that will not attract other animals to the site. Home burials allow pet parents to be near their pet's remains, but this option may not be suitable or practical in all cases.
Rendering - Rendering factories process animal bodies into products such as tallow and fertilizer. Your local veterinarian or animal care facilities should be able to advise you on the availability of this option.
